The TMAT GPX file has been split into two pieces, East (the original) and Central (new proposed routes). See the Trails page for more info. This should help folks who have limited memory on their GPS devices and only want to download one part of the Trail.
Ham Radio and Minnesota trail riding
May 16, 2011I have never liked the idea of getting stuck somewhere out in the middle of nowhere without cell phone coverage on my bike. So the idea of using a small handheld Ham radio to reach out to get some help has always been appealing to me. I am pretty new to Ham Radio (received my license last year) but have found the extensive repeater network (if you are not a Ham, then think cell towers for portable radios) in Minnesota impressive. I uploaded a GPS map of every repeater in Minnesota here. I think it would be very handy to have along with to see what frequencies would be available in the area you are in. If there are other Hams out there reading this blog please sound off in the comments about your success (or lack there of) using Ham radio while on the trail.
Proposed TMAT route updated
April 19, 2011Route C proposed to go from Rice to Brainerd has been updated. I was hoping the bridge over the Nokasippi River had been fixed. But a inspection on Friday showed that it had not. This would make a very dangerous water crossing so the route has changed to jot back over to Hwy 371 for a couple miles to use that bridge instead. This is really too bad as that is a fun section of dual track. See dualsportmaps.com for the updated GPX.
Brainerd to International Falls Ride this Weekend
April 12, 2011I am planning to ride the “proposed” Trans-Minnesota Adventure Trail (TMAT)routes this weekend in the area north of Brainerd and Southwest of International Falls. I am trailering to just south of Brainerd Friday Night, camping there, then riding all day Saturday, camping again (somewhere) on Saturday night and then loading back up Sunday morning. If anyone wants to join the exploration of the new routes for the TMAT feel free to post in the comments. Otherwise, enjoy the warm weather….finally!
UPDATE! = With the new forecast showing a low of 26 degrees and a 50-70% chance of snow Saturday I think old man winter had not left the northwoods yet. Ride is cancelled!
Small TMAT Update
April 12, 2011A recommendation from riders on advrider.com was to add a small detour off Hwy 169 to take in short segment of scenic road and county park. The trail has been updated to included that. If you’re not in the mood for a scenic detour while on the trail, just stay on 169 and you will meet up with the trail again in a couple miles. No worries.
“Cheesehead trail” now posted
March 1, 2011For those of you wanting some guidance on how to connect from the Trans-Minnesota Adventure Trail to the Trans-Wisconsin Adventure trail your wait is over. The Maps page now contains both a northern and southern route to the beginning and end of the Wisconsin trail. This basically now forms a “loop” that can be followed for an epic moto-adventure.
Flooded Trails
February 28, 2011In case you are wondering, all that snow that is sitting outside your window won’t last long. Spring is only a few weeks away. The record snowfall WILL result in flooding. The MN DNR has posted a site that attempts to predict where the flooding will be worst. This is a reminder to all riders to watch for trail closing signs and check out MN DNR websites BEFORE going riding this Spring. Chances are that many trails or rural roads will be closed.
New photos added
February 16, 2011New photos have been added to the Map. Since DualSportMaps.com allows photos to be embedded right into the map I figure its a good way for people to see the terrain before they actually make the trip.
If you have photos from your adventure on the TMAT please use the Contact page to send them to us. We will add them to the Map.
Trout Valley and Snake Creek OHM Trail GPX files added.
January 2, 2011The Trans-Minnesota Adventure Trail goes right by 2 state OHM trails in the southern part of the state. The Maps page now has GPX files of those areas available for you to download. These two areas are small, but if you have never ridden them before the GPX files are nice for navigating.
TMAT Trail updated
July 19, 2010The northern route of the Trans-Minnesota Adventure Trail has been updated on the Google Map, Track 8, as well as a few segments of other tracks. This brings ALOT more dirt into the trail while only adding a few dozen miles. We are nearing what I would consider a “final” route and that is where I can begin creating GPX tracks. Hooray!
